In almost every category, ‘Madison’ is a much improved Confederate Jasmine. It produces more flowers with a sweeter orange-blossom aroma, has improved cold hardiness, an extended blooming period, slightly larger leaves, and has a more compact growth habit than other Trachelospermum varieties. Although both ‘Madison’ and the standard Confederate Jasmines both sport glossy evergreen foliage, Madison’s leaves have a fuzzy underside as well. For those gardeners that live and garden in USDA Zone 7, you now can grow a fragrant Confederate Jasmine vine… just make sure that it’s a Madison!

In USDA Zone 7 spring planting is advised to allow the plant to establish itself before winter. In USDA Zones 8 and further south the vine can be safely planted year round.

For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Jasmine variety is not winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. That said, this vine grows quickly so you might have to cut it back some before bringing it indoors.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing quickly to 12 feet or more in height or length and 2 to 4 feet wide, the Madison Jasmine is ideal for use to climb along the top of fences, on a trellis, on a mailbox, or over an arbor or any other structure that might benefit from or support this magnificent fragrant vine. It can also be useful as a groundcover for slopes or embankments where it will sprawl and naturalize, or to climb into smaller trees where early flowering is especially noticeable. To better and more often enjoy the wonderful fragrance, make sure to plant this one near windows or outdoor living spaces. Needless to say, the fragrant flowers make this vine a must in sensory gardens!

Cultural Preferences

Madison Confederate Jasmine tolerates a wide range of soils. It will tolerate somewhat damp soils but is also quite drought tolerant when established. It prefers growing in the sun but will tolerate some afternoon shade. In warmer climates, the vine would appreciate a little break from the hottest part of the afternoon sun. Avoid pruning prior to the flowering season or you will cut off the flower buds. Fertilize once a year with a well balanced slow release fertilizer.

I was very happy to find an evergreen jasmine vine hearty to zone 7A on your web site. The plants arrived well packed, in good condition, and farther along in the growing season than I had expected. Good quality root ball and buds already to open!
I have 2 suggestions: the unpacking instructions were INSIDE the box. Would have saved me a lot of time and effort if I had known there was a preferred way of unpacking the box. Also, DEER RESISTANT didn’t work in my area. I planted, did not fence, but lost the tops of 2 plants on the second night. Would suggest removing DEER RESISTANT from your description . I would still have ordered but would have put up fencing.
I love the selection of Southern plants (being from North Carolina) and look forward to ordering from you again. I am in search of a gardenia hardy to 7A that does not require a protected location. Unfortunately, I lost my two jasmine growing on the trellis to the freezing temperatures this winter. What Wilson Bros shipped me were these gorgeous plants that were four feet tall with three or four shoots on each plant to replace them. I could not have gotten anything locally as beautiful nor would they be able to withstand colder temperatures as these. Very pleased. We live in Zone 8. Purchased a 1-gallon size of the Maddison Jasmine for our backyard arbor. Well packaged and plant was a nice size, green and tall enough where I had to wrap some of the tendrils around the arbor’s grillwork during planting. Plant even had put out a few small flowers. Planted where it would receive full sun but roots and base of plant would receive light shade in afternoon. A bit of transplant shock, but fed with liquid fertilizer and kept soil slightly damp for the next 2 weeks after planting. Presently sending out new growth and flowers. Picked one of the small, white delicate flowers and thought I caught a slight momentary whiff of scent when held to my nose, but understandably, this is a young one-gallon sized plant and don’t expect stronger fragrance until plant is more mature.

I believe that our original shipment was standard Confederate Jasmine but not the “Madison” variety which seems to be much improved, smaller and ones we ordered, . The staff responded and quickly sent out 2 replacement plants which I feel, by the slightly different leaf type, is the Madison selection we originally ordered.

Absolutely beautiful plants! I am so happy with these. After a particularly (and record-breaking) cold winter here, our previous Madison Jasmines did not survive. I was heartbroken. These arrived quickly and were full, and full of color already. Plants arrived healthy and looked fine. We got them in the ground within 24 hours and they took right to the sun and water. I put a base layer of mulch over the roots as the instructions said. That said, if during the first winter colder-than-normal temperatures (below 20F) are in the forecast, for insurance it’s a good idea to cover the vines with a blanket or sheet plastic until temperatures have risen, and maybe apply a 3 to 4 inch layer of extra mulch to help insulate the roots. The mulch can come off in spring leaving maybe a 1.5 to 2 inch layer around the plants. Keep us posted as to how the vine does in your area. I was pleasantly surprised by the size and overall health of my Madison Confederate Jasmine. I bought two and they were very carefully packaged. It was over a week before I got a chance to plant them and they held up nicely. The Madison Confederate jasmine plants I received are robust and beautiful. They are bigger than expected and the customer service throughout the process was the best I ever experienced

I have four of these. One arrived crushed in the box by FedEx but it grew and looks just as nice as the other three.

The Madison Jasmine I ordered arrived via FedEx in beautiful condition. The plant was in a one gallon pot, the soil nice and moist with damp paper packed around base of main stem to keep roots secure in pot. The foliage was pretty, fresh and green. Could not be more pleased with the condition of the plant having traveled from GA to VA looking like it was just purchased from a local garden center! Can’t wait to see it bloom this summer and if it really has more blooms than my Confederate Jasmine.

Received beautiful 3 -gallon Confederate Jasmine in excellent condition. The plentiful leaves are lush and green. It is ready for immediate planting.
